Dear Sir/Madam,

Submission: Proposed three route options for the upgrade of the highway between Mt Victoria and Lithgow

I oppose all three route options as proposed by the RTA for the upgrade of the Great Western Highway between Mt Victoria and Lithgow.

All three proposed route options are excessive and a waste of taxpayers’ money. Instead of spending over $600 million on an upgrade that will allow 26 metre B-doubles to use the highway to cross the Blue Mountains and only save 5 to 8 minutes travel time, why don’t the Australian and NSW governments take a long term approach to the transport needs of the Central West?

Each proposed route option will encourage more trucks onto the Great Western Highway, which is nothing more than a suburban and tourist road with nearly 39 different speed zones. Sixteen towns and villages and ten schools front the highway.

We believe the Australian and NSW Governments should take a long term approach to the transport needs of the Central West and invest in rail for freight and improve the safety on Bells Line of Road. Improved safety on Victoria Pass could be achieved at only a fraction of the cost of any of the RTA’s proposed upgrade route options. Wasting hundreds of millions of dollars on an upgrade that will encourage more trucks and threaten the future of the Blue Mountains won’t improve safety.
